Relocating to another country unlocks so much in life that you may never ordinarily experience in the UK. Whilst the Costas have traditionally been the destinations of choice for the typical British expat, Spain offers a huge variety of towns and cities. For the adventurous expat there are a vast array of beautiful, historical and interesting places to discover.
The Spanish, on the whole, are a very social and family orientated people, they love sport, they love food and they love a party! Most Spanish cities have their own traditions, fiestas and festivals and there always seems to be something going on.
Spain has over 300 days of sunshine every year in the south of the country. It also has some of the most affordable and delicious food anywhere in the world, making Spain a fantastic place to live.
Top 3 things to consider when you’re ready to move to Spain
Below you’ll find Indalo Transport’s Top 3 things to consider in order to make your relocation run smoothly. That way you can start enjoying your adventure, rather than seeing it as an overwhelming challenge.
Clearly it is going to cost you more to get all of your things over to Europe than it would do if you just moved within the UK.
And whilst we work hard to keep our pan-European removal service so wonderfully affordable, we do suggest that before you start packing and gathering quotes, you should have a thorough de-clutter and think hard about what exactly you do and don’t need to take with you.
At Indalo Transport we base our prices on the inventory of items to move. This inventory can be sorted out by you, or we can visit you to survey what is to be moved. Because of this, each customer’s removals cost are unique. We work out our fee from the volume and weight that your belongings will take up in our removals vans, so if you only have a handful of things, your removals quote will work out a lot cheaper.
We also take into consideration how far apart the collection and delivery points are, so if you’d like to move to France, it will cost less than if you wanted to move to the Southern Coast of Spain.
Whilst it can be quite to hard get rid of things, especially items that have been a part of our lives for so long, the process of de-cluttering is actually very therapeutic. If you’re struggling to part with your possessions, here are three questions to ask yourself about each item
- Have I used it in the last three years?
- Is it something that’s old, outdated and easily replaced?
- Does it hold any sentimental value at all?
If you’ve not used something for a while, it’s safe to say that you’re probably not going to use it in the future, so sell it or give it away to charity, otherwise it’ll take up precious space in your removal van.
With no sentimental value at all, but you’re still not sure about whether to take it with you or not, have a look on eBay at what you could sell it for. The results may sway you into letting it go for some extra cash, which always comes in handy when you’re moving.
Another piece of advice that we can give you, is that if you have a lot of documents, why not scan them in to your computer and have digital copies of them that you can print out at a later date – if you ever need to. Alternatively, there are plenty of cloud based storage options for you to utilize, like Evernote, Onedrive, Dropbox or Google Drive. Bear in mind though, don’t just start shredding things willy-nilly, because with certain official documents you must keep original copies for a number of years.
It’s always hard to say how long de-cluttering your house will take, so it’s always best to start as soon as possible, and ideally you should start talking to removals companies at least three months before you move.

We promise that it will take away all the stresses that packing your own belongings normally involves. Whilst it is a more expensive option than if you wanted to source your own packaging or buy it from us, it’s certainly a more convenient and faster solution for you, so that you can sit back and not have to worry about any of the moving process at all. You can focus on what the first things you’ll do when you get to your new home will be.
You could say that watching the experienced Indalo Transport removals team at work is like watching a work of art being created. The team will visit your house and carefully pack away all the contents of each room of your home into sturdy boxes, using bubble wrap and wrapping paper for delicate or fragile items.
They’ll mark up all your boxes so that they know where to put them when they arrive at their new home. For larger items, the team uses a special export grade bubble blanket that’s been especially designed for protecting furniture on long moves. We also use special quilted sofa covers and padded TV covers to make sure that these items have the maximum protection.
Mattresses are put into heavy duty plastic bags to protect them. When the team come to loading the truck, they doubly protect your items again, by using removal transit blankets, to really make sure that nothing gets damaged.
3. Countdown to your move
Once you’re all booked with your removals company and you’ve decided on who you’d like to do the packing, this is a great time to really research the new place you’re moving to. Not only will this get you excited, it’ll also give you an idea of what jobs you’ll need to do within the first few days or weeks of settling in to your new home.
Some things to research are how to open bank accounts and find out what’s around in your local area. If you have a pet, you will need to find out whether the country you’re moving to has any restrictions on the breed of cat or dog that you have as well. Regarding the language, it might be worth downloading some common phrases you may need. Then you can practice them for when you settle in, unless of course you already speak the language.
When it is the last month before you relocate, it’s always a good idea to inform companies, people and organisations in the UK that you’re going to be moving and to give them your forwarding address if necessary.
In the last week before your big move to Europe, double check your inventory and inform your removals company of any additional items you wish to take with you. You’ll also need to make sure that they have received your payment.
